GUIDES
Stabilize KH / alkalinity (safe and gradual)
Stable KH prevents pH swings. The key is measured doses, re-testing, and spreading adjustment over days when needed.
What KH does
- Buffers pH so it doesn’t swing daily
- Supports biofilter stability
- Reduces stress that drives flashing and poor healing
Safe approach
- Confirm ammonia/nitrite are 0 (or fix those first).
- Raise KH in steps, not all at once.
- Re-test KH and pH after each adjustment.
- Repeat over days until pH is stable (night vs morning).
How to know it worked
- Night vs morning pH stops drifting
- Fish calm down (less flashing/irritation behavior)
- Water stays stable after normal feeding and bio-load
